Two men who were recently intercepted by Custom-anti-narcotics unit (CANU) ranks with a quantity of cocaine and marijuana stashed amongst fertiliser, were today remanded to prison for the offence.
Twenty-four-year-old Randy Chester, a porter and 45-year-old Christopher Garraway, a driver, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge stated that on January 16, 2020 at John Fernandes Container Terminal Road, Back Road, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Garraway supply to Chester 22 kilograms of marijuana and 2.740 kilograms of cocaine.
The last charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, Chester trafficked 22 kilograms of marijuana and 2.740 kilograms of cocaine.
Both men denied the charges after they were read to them by the magistrate.
Facts presented by CANU Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford stated that on the day in question, ranks acting on information, intercepted the truck at the Back Road, West Ruimveldt which was destined for Berbice.
A search was carried out and a quantity of marijuana and cocaine were hidden in two white salt bags. The men were then arrested and taken into custody.
Sandiford made serious objections to bail being granted to the defendants on the grounds that both defendants gave caution statements implicating each other.
The prosecutor further told the court that a CANU officer was on site who witnessed the handing over of the narcotics.
The prosecutor further indicated to the court that the prosecution intends to bring substantial evidence against the defendants. The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded both men to prison.
They were instructed to make their next court appearance on January 29,2020 when they will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
