Avianca, a prominent Colombian airline, is set to launch direct flights to Guyana on December 11, 2024. This new route strengthens Guyana’s connections with Colombia and opens up opportunities for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

The route will link Georgetown, Guyana’s capital, to Bogotá, Colombia, with a convenient twice-weekly service. Passengers will travel aboard an Airbus A320 aircraft, which has a seating capacity of 180 passengers.

Avianca’s introduction to the market makes it the seventh airline to begin operations in Guyana since 2020, bringing the number of new destinations available to five. This expansion is poised to draw more visitors to Guyana’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, while also streamlining trade between Guyana, Colombia, and other South American nations, fostering deeper cultural ties in the region.

Government officials have warmly welcomed Avianca’s entry, viewing it as a strategic step toward establishing Guyana as a regional hub for travel and commerce.

Deodat Indar, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, highlighted the impact of this partnership, stating, “As the Government continues to invest in modernizing the country’s aviation infrastructure and forge partnerships with renowned global airlines, Avianca’s entry into the local market will significantly boost interest in our country’s unique offerings.”

Oneidge Walrond, Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, echoed this sentiment, noting the benefits to tourism and the economy. She said, “It will also significantly boost our local tourism industry, creating new jobs and opportunities for businesses. This positive development will further enhance Guyana’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.”

Bishop Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, also emphasized the government’s dedication to expanding Guyana’s air connectivity, noting that it is essential for positioning Guyana as a key travel and commerce hub in the region. He added, “We are spending heavily on infrastructure improvements to make Guyana an even more appealing destination for investors and airlines. Our upgraded airport and related infrastructure will be critical in increasing our appeal for international air connectivity.”

With the launch of Avianca’s flights, Guyana’s aviation landscape will see a notable increase in seat availability, giving travelers more choices and potentially leading to lower fares. In 2024 alone, Guyana has already increased its airline seat capacity by 200,000 and seen an additional 125,000 passenger movements.

Avianca’s extensive network, connecting over 100 destinations throughout the Americas and Europe, is expected to make Guyana a more accessible and attractive destination for international travelers, enhancing its appeal on the global stage.
