Presidential hopeful, Azruddin Mohamed has taken credit for the government supposedly reinstating salary deductions to Albion Sugar Estate workers.

In a Facebook post, the businessman said it was only after hundreds of workers “vented their concerns” that the Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha immediately ordered the reinstatment of wages and salaries that were deducted.

During the meeting, Mohamed said that over 250 workers indicated that their wages and salaries were cut by a staggering 25% without any justification. They also decried the deplorable working conditions and the lack of proper management at the estate.

“However, on Saturday, the Agriculture Minister met the aggrieved workers and instructed that GuySuCo pay them their full wages and salaries moving forward. This will benefit over 1500 workers. Also, he promised to look into the other issues. The workers also stated that for the first time, President Dr Irfaan Ali is due to meet with them,” the post read.

It added, “In light of the recent developments, the sugar workers expressed gratitude to the business executive for his timely intervention and commended him for the power he holds as he was the only person who could have forced the authorities to act with speed. They also noted that this is the first time the president will be meeting with them face-to-face and again thanked Mr Mohamed for making this possible.”
