Nazim Hamid, a 21-year-old mechanic from Brighton Village, Berbice, is believed to have drowned at around 16:00hrs on Sunday at Coomacka Mines, Upper Demerara River. According to reports, a 16-year-old female student told cops that she and Nazim are involved in a relationship, and he normally visits her on weekends.
The student said Nazim visited Linden on Saturday last and they, along with some friends, went to Coomacka Mines Beach (Upper Demerara River) to swim.
She said Nazim started swimming towards the centre of the river, after which she saw him start to sink. She shouted for help, but before anyone responded, Nazim’s body went below the surface of the river and disappeared. The student further said that with the help of public-spirited persons in the area, they made checks for Nazim’s body along the river area near where the incident occurred, but he was not located.
Investigations are in progress.
