Cops on the East Coast of Demerara are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at about 04:00 hrs today on the Montrose public road, East Coast Demerara.
The accident involved motorcar, PAC 8964, owned and driven by a 24-year-old Welder of Martyrsville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and a pedestrian (particulars unknown at this time).
Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding east along Montrose public Road when it is alleged by the driver that the pedestrian (now deceased) ran from north to south across the road into the path of the vehicle.
Upon seeing this, the driver said he applied the brakes and a collision occurred, where the pedestrian was flung eastwards and fell onto the road’s surface. The pedestrian received injuries to his body, and the driver drove away from the scene but subsequently returned.
An ambulance was summoned to the scene, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead. He was placed into a police vehicle and conveyed to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary. The body is presently awaiting a post-mortem examination and identification.
The accident scene was visited by ASP Gobin, Lance Corporal Harlequin, and a party of police ranks. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the driver and the vehicle was examined by a licensing and certifying officer.
A breathalyser test was also conducted on the driver and it showed no trace of alcohol in his system. The driver is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
