Police are investigating an accident that occurred today (Thursday) on the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara (in the vicinity of Pump Road) that resulted in the death of 45-year-old Jomo Peters of Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara.
The accident involved motorcar PYY 4296 driven by a 21-year-old female; motorcar PAE 9879 driven by a 28-year-old female; and motorcycle CR 2701 which was controlled by the now-deceased man.
According to reports, Peters was proceeding east along Rupert Craig Highway, allegedly at a fast rate and without wearing a safety helmet, overtaking the line of traffic which was proceeding east while the ‘third lane’ was in progress.
Guyana Standard understands that the left side handle bar of his motorcycle collided into the front left side and rear view mirror of motorcar PYY 4296 which was proceeding west along the said road.
This caused Peters to lose control. The motorcycist further collided with the left side front portion of motor car PAE 9879 which was also proceeding west.
After colliding with the last vehicle, Peters was flung onto the median, sustaining multiple injuries about his head and body.
EMT’s were summoned to the scene, where they pronounced him dead.
The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Breathalyzer tests conducted on both drivers showed no trace of alcohol.
Both drivers are in custody assisting with further investigations.
