Please see statement from the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) following the recent gas station explosion on Regent and King Street, Georgetown:
The Forward Guyana Movement condemns, in the strongest and most unequivocal terms, the horrific act that claimed the innocent life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne and injured several others following the tragic explosion at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown, on Sunday evening, October 26, 2025.
The loss of a child under such devastating circumstances has shaken the conscience of our nation and plunged every Guyanese heart into mourning. We extend our deepest condolences to Soraya’s family and loved ones, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured and traumatized by this senseless tragedy.
Preliminary reports and circulating footage suggest the involvement of an individual who may not be a Guyanese national. While the facts must be verified through due investigation, the incident highlights the deep failures in our immigration oversight, border control, and intelligence coordination. These are not new deficiencies; they are longstanding vulnerabilities that our successive warnings have failed to correct. This irresponsible attitude by the government now leaves our people exposed to unacceptable danger.
Only a few months ago, explosions occurred at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and a nearby power installation. Whether or not these incidents are connected, the pattern reveals a disturbing failure of preparedness and preventive security measures. The Government’s inability to anticipate, mitigate, and respond effectively to these threats has left the public anxious and fearful.
In light of these developments, the Forward Guyana Movement calls on President Irfaan Ali and the Government of Guyana to convene an emergency meeting with all Opposition Party Leaders. Such a meeting is urgently needed to craft a unified, non-partisan national response to the growing threats to public safety, and to reassure the nation that the security and well-being of every Guyanese, regardless of background or origin, remain the foremost duty of the State.
The Government must also issue clear and credible assurances to the people of Guyana, outlining immediate steps being taken to strengthen national security, tighten coordination among law enforcement agencies, and restore public confidence.
The FGM further calls on the Guyana Police Force and all relevant authorities to ensure that every available resource is mobilized to identify and bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to swift and decisive justice. Acts of terror and violence must never find refuge in impunity.
At the same time, we urge all citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and united. This is a moment for solidarity, not suspicion; for collective resolve, not division. No person or group must be targeted or blamed based on ethnicity, language, or nationality. Our strength as a people lies in our unity, our decency, and our commitment to justice under the rule of law.
We must all reaffirm that every life in Guyana is sacred and that the protection of our people is, and must always be, the highest responsibility of those who govern.
