Police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ are investigating the theft of $7 million in cash from a vehicle at Durban Backlands, Georgetown, on Wednesday afternoon.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred at around 17:30hrs and involved a 35-year-old Chinese businesswoman of Durban Backlands. The woman had reportedly left a black plastic bag containing cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus, which was unlocked at the time.
Investigators said the businesswoman was supervising the offloading of a nearby container when the theft took place.
It is alleged that a 16-year-old labourer from the area entered the vehicle and removed the bag containing the cash.
CCTV footage retrieved from the vicinity reportedly captured the suspect entering the vehicle and exiting shortly after with a bulky black plastic bag.
Following the report, police ranks conducted searches in Durban Backlands, during which $4.39 million in Guyana currency was recovered. Four persons were subsequently arrested.
Those in custody include the 16-year-old suspect, along with a 46-year-old female vendor, a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant, and a 38-year-old male labourer.
The recovered cash was counted in the presence of the suspects and later lodged as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing.
