A post-mortem examination conducted today on the body of 30-year-old Otis John Jordan Payne, of South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, has ruled that he died of peritonitis (infection of the abdomen due to a perforated stomach ulcer).
Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh performed the examination at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation mortuary. Guyana Standard understands that specimens were also taken from the body for a toxicology report.
The body was subsequently handed over to the family.
Payne reportedly collapsed in a cell at the Cove and John Police Station on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Two ranks attached to the said station were placed under close arrest and are assisting with the investigation.
