Police are investigating an alleged river mishap which occurred on Saturday May 16, 2026 about 20:00hrs in the Essequibo River, in the vicinity of Buckhall Landing.

The incident resulted in the death of Andrew Christopher Bradford, called “Chris,” a 38-year-old pork-knocker of De William, West Coast Demerara and Caria Caria, Essequibo River.

Initial enquiries revealed that a speed boat operated by a 41-year-old captain of Springfield, Essequibo Coast, was proceeding in the vicinity of Buckhall Landing with five passengers when a collision reportedly occurred with a small wooden boat being operated by the now deceased.

As a result of the collision, the wooden boat capsized and the 38-year-old fell into the river. Several searches were conducted, but he was not immediately located.

On Sunday May 17, 2026, about 10:40hrs, Police ranks, along with members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and relatives, conducted further searches in the area. About 11:48hrs, the motionless body of the deceased was recovered from the river.

The body was escorted to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. The body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The speed boat operator is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

Investigations are ongoing.
