Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has confirmed that an incident occurred in the vicinity of the Sophia Substation earlier today, resulting in injuries to two contractors and a partial disturbance of the interconnected power system.

The company said that the injured individuals were promptly attended to by emergency responders and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they are receiving medical attention.

GPL noted that both individuals are in stable condition.

“GPL takes all incidents involving the safety of personnel seriously. As such, a joint investigation has been initiated by the company’s Health and Safety Unit and the Ministry of Labour to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, the investigation remains ongoing,” the company said in a statement earlier.

“The company extends its thoughts and best wishes to the injured workers and their families and hopes for their full and speedy recovery.”
