Twenty-nine-year-old police corporal Shareef Mohamed appeared in the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was charged in relation to the June 28 hit-and-run accident that killed two Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara men.
Mohamed, who is stationed at the Annandale Police Outpost, pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash between Clonbrook and Anns Grove on the Railway Embankment that claimed the lives of Akeem Burgess and Collis Bristol, both of Nabaclis.
In addition to the two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, Mohamed was slapped with other traffic-related charges including; failing to stop after an accident, failing to render assistance, operating an uncertified motor vehicle, and failing to report an accident.
Bail was granted for the two causing death charges at $750,000 each. Bail of $10,000 was granted for each of the remaining offences. The matter was adjourned to July 29.
Meanwhile, Wednesday morning samples were taken from both victims’ bodies and submitted to the laboratory for DNA testing as part of the ongoing investigation.
