The National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) on Wednesday announced that the contract to lift MV Barima was awarded to BK International Inc. According to the contract description, the company is tasked with salvaging of the MV Barima wreck off Devonshire Castle Flats, Essequibo Coast on “No Cure No Pay Basis”
The MV Barima capsized and sank on the night of Saturday, July 18, 2026, while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. A distress call was received at about 11:00 p.m. During the search and results operations, 73 bodies were recovered from the MV Barima disaster. Search and recovery operations officially concluded in early August. While 76 people had been rescued, based on an estimated 179 people aboard. Many others remain missing.
