People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Presidential Candidate, Irfaan Ali, has still not been cleared to travel to Canada due to him not fulfilling certain requirements, Guyana Standard has been informed.

Ali was scheduled to leave Guyana in January for a series of meetings in Toronto but, one day before his departure, he was informed by the North American nation that he could not travel there.

Ali, who has a valid passport and a Canadian visa, had issued a statement, “On Monday, January 28, 2019, at 4:05 pm, I received a correspondence from the High Commission of Canada, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, advising me of a report in relation to the 19 trumped-up charges by SOCU [Special Organised Crime Unit]. In the correspondence, they advised me not to travel and give 30 days to respond to the correspondence.”

This media house was informed that the Canadian High Commission had told Ali that he could not travel because of his application for residency. However, at a press conference earlier this year, Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, said that that was a mistake and that the Canadians had sent another letter.

Today, he told Guyana Standard that he is not sure if Ali can travel as yet. He said that he has to be updated on the matter.
