Senior Magistrate Leron Daly today committed an East Ruimveldt, Georgetown man to stand trial for the rape of a nine-year old girl.

Thirty-year-old Mario Heywood was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that, between October 1, 2018, and November 20, 2018 at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.

This afternoon the magistrate ruled that, after perusing the entirety of the evidence, she was satisfied that substantial evidence was presented against Heywood for the offence he was charged with. Hence, she told him he will face a judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

According to information, the child is known to the defendant.

Sometime during the period mentioned in the charge, the child was left in his care. It is alleged that Heywood raped the child while her parents were out. The child later confided in her mother about what had transpired and the matter was reported to the police.

An investigation was carried out and Heywood was arrested and charged. He remains on $250,000 bail pending the outcome of his trial.
