A 27-year-old man told the court today that be boils marijuana and gives it to his nephew who suffers from asthma. The man, Keon Grenville of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was charged for being in possession of two grams of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to perform six weeks of community service and fined $10,000.

Grenville appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that on June 7, 2019 at Phase One East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he had in his possession 2 grams of narcotics.

Grenville in his explanation to the court stated, “I does boil the weed and make tea for my nephew because he has asthma.”

The man added that since giving his nephew the tea the child no longer breathes heavily.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss stated that on June 7 at around 06:00 hrs, ranks from the narcotics branch were conducting search exercises when they saw Grenville acting in a suspicious manner. A search was then conducted and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana was found in his pants pocket. He was told of the offence to which he admitted.

The magistrate, after listening to both sides, told Grenville that he should take the child to see a paediatrician because giving him marijuana is very dangerous. The magistrate also instructed him to attend three sessions of counselling.
