The manpower of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. has been bolstered with the addition of 15 technicians who graduated from the power company’s most recent technician programme for the county of Berbice.

The technicians all hail from areas on the east and west banks of Berbice and underwent training for the period of 2017-2018.

The 15 new recruits are Nigel Fredericks, who was named the Best Graduating Technician; Elvis Thompson, Osayande Roberts, Lawrenzo James, Toshana Emanuel, Bryan Richmond, Jarrod Usher, Rinson Rose, Kareem Wayne, Nickel Cameron, Christopher Jaundoo, Samuel Isaacs, Nicosie Griffith, Donnell Lewis, and Shawn Smith.

Among the fifteen are 13 Mechanical Operations Technicians and two Electrical Operations Technicians who are all currently employed at the GPL’s Canefield and Onverwagt Power Stations.

The one year Technicians’ Programme conforms to the Industrial Training Act in the Laws of Guyana and is administered by GPL’s Training and Development Department through Kowalfki Etwah with support from technical staff, including Ike Crawford, Maintenance Superintendent and Mr Rawle James, Maintenance Superintendent, at the Onverwagt and Canefield Power Stations.

In a statement, GPL explained, “The programme offers a combination of theoretical and practical training geared towards developing and upgrading the prerequisite skill sets of trainee technicians for gainful employment across the technical areas of our Berbice Operations.”

A graduation ceremony was held on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the Little Rock Conference Room, New Amsterdam, Berbice. It was attended by Orin Gordon -Training and Development Manager (ag), Nichette Williams – Human Resources Officer, Maxene Thompson – Principal of New Amsterdam Technical Institute, Lindsey Shepherd – Senior Diesel Generation Engineer (ag), Kadalie Rose – Senior Transmission and Distribution Engineer, Oswald Benn – Engineer, Rawle James – Maintenance Supervisor, Dennis Swan – Training and Development Manager, special invitees, and parents/guardians of technicians.
