Just after lunch today, former Foreign Affairs Minister, Rashleigh Jackson had to be rescued from his Republic Park, East Bank Demerara (EBD) home after a fire erupted.

Jackson, who served as Minister under the People’s National Congress (PNC) Administration in 1978, is currently being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for smoke inhalation.

According to information received, a next door neighbour noticed smoke coming from the back of the elderly man’s house and raised an alarm.

It is known that the 90-year-old would usually be home alone during the day so residents called out for him after seeing the smoke.

They were eventually forced to break a window in the upper flat of the house to get to Jackson who was in his bedroom.

Fire fighters managed to contain the blaze to the back of the property. The cause is not known yet.
