A 47-year-old driver attached to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs died this afternoon, hours after the apartment he had been renting went up in flames at Princes Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown.

The deceased has been identified as Gavin North of Lot,41 Princes Street. He lived in an apartment in the upper flat of the now destroyed two-storey building.

According to information received, at around 11:30 hrs this morning, a fire started in the upper flat of the building and spread to the entire property by the time fire-fighters arrived.

North was at work when he received the phone call that his home was on fire. By the time he got there, he was unable to save anything.

The 47-year-old man collapsed shortly after arriving at the scene. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he later died.

Four families are now homeless.
