A retrial has been ordered for 59-year-old Carlyle Williams who is accused of engaging in sexual activity with an 11-year-old girl during October 2017. Following a trial for two counts of the indictment this afternoon, a jury was unable to arrive at a verdict, even after deliberating for almost two hours. As a result, trial Judge Jo-Ann Barlow ordered a retrial for Williams which should be at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes. In the meantime, he remains on bail.

Williams is alleged to have committed the offences between October 14, 2017 and October 15, 2017. According to court facts, the young girl went to visit Williams’ home at Linden. While in bed reading the child a story on October 14, 2017, it is alleged that Williams raped her. The following day, Williams is accused of going into the child’s room and taking advantage of her again. The child complained to her mother and a report was made to the police; Williams was arrested and charged.

Prosecutors Teriq Mohammed and Mandel Moore appeared for the State, while Williams was represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir.
