A 26-year-old miner who is accused of killing his co-worker over stolen raw gold, was today charged with the offence.

Emric Joseph was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on February 26,2020 at Lime Tree Road, Black Water Cuyuni, he murdered Compton Benjamin.

The unrepresented man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, the men were at the mining camp when Joseph asked Benjamin for the raw gold that he stole from him.

The court heard as a result, the two began to argue and Benjamin picked up a wood and dealt Joseph a lash to his arm.

It was then that Joseph pulled out a knife and stabbed Benjamin to the left side of his chest.

The injured man was then rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An investigation was then conducted and Joseph was arrested.

The Prosecutor added that while in custody, Joseph admitted to committing the offence.

The Chief Magistrate remanded Joseph to prison until March 12 when he will appear in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
