46-year-old, Mohan Sookdeo was this morning sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for fatally stabbing his son.

Sookdeo, who was initially indicted for murder pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter after his arraignment before Justice Sandil Kissoon.

He thereby admitted that on September 8, 2018, at Lot 217, Foulis, East Coast Demerara, he unlawfully killed his son, 21-year-old Satesh Sookdeo.

Based on previous reports, the older Sookdeo was assaulting his wife when his son came to his mother’s aid. As a result, Mohan broke a piece of louvre window and stabbed his son to the stomach.

State Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy said that the killing stemmed from domestic violence. The prosecutor described Mohan as an alcoholic who was in the habit of abusing his family.

Mohan’s lawyer, Maxwell McKay told the court that his client regrets what he has done.

Justice Kissoon sentenced Sookdeo to 20 years behind bars. The judge also ordered the prison authorities to deduct from the sentence, the time Mohan spent in pre trial detention.
