Two youths who the court heard robbed a man of his phone and ran into a police officer while trying to get away, were today charged and remanded for the offence.

Eighteen-year-old Randy Smartt of South Road Lacytown and twenty-six-year-old Niants Daniels, a mechanic of Werk-en-rust, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The men were not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on March 29,2020, at Georgetown, they stole from the person of Daniels Rawlins one phone valued $51,000 and $15,000 cash.

The unrepresented men, in addressing the court , stated that they were riding on a bicycle when Smartt fell off the bike after the handle hit the virtual complainant.

The men added that the victim then pulled out a knife from his pants pocket and began chasing them down the road which caused them to run into a police officer.

However, facts presented by the prosecutor stated that the victim was walking going home when he was approached by the defendants who were riding a bicycle.

The court heard the men held onto the victim and relieved him of his phone and cash. An alarm was then raised and in an attempt to make good their escape, they ran into a police officer.

The men were then arrested and taken to the station. Further investigation was carried out and the men were caught on CCTV footage robbing the victim.

The Magistrate remanded both men to prison until April 22.
