Now that a 6PM to 6AM curfew is in place until May 3 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, the use of the internet by Guyanese at home will see a sharp increase. Taking this into consideration, political activist and economic expert, Peter Ramsaroop is calling on internet providers to waive internet and data fees and even lift the data caps as a show of support for citizens who are adjusting to the new restrictions.

Speaking to Guyana Standard recently, Ramsaroop asserted that many Guyanese will turn to the internet for both updates from various sources on the disease and for social contact to cushion the emotional effects of isolation and lockdown. On this note, he reminded that the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT), has taken measures to help its customers such as extending the payment date for bills. But this, he feels, is not enough to assist with the crisis the country is facing.

The economic expert said, “Everyone has to play a role in this fight and the reduction of the price for calls and the removal of taxes on data, along with the other suggestions made earlier, are just a few ways the telecommunications industry can help.”

Ramsaroop added that the economic crisis and contraction that is upon Guyana and the world over will have far-reaching effects. “The least we can do is try to make citizens cope at home during this mentally taxing period.”
