Two weeks after a labourer fatally stabbed his estranged wife, he was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for murder.

Twenty-four-year-old Jamal Angus called “Country” of Number 30 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court where a murder charge was read to him virtually.

Angus was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on April 16, 2020, at Ithaca, West Coast Berbice (WCB) he murdered Vanessa Benjamin.

He was remanded to prison until June 10, 2020.

According to information, the 21-year-old mother of two was stabbed just after 18:00 hrs at her Ithaca, West Coast Berbice (WCB) home.

Her mother was stabbed once by Angus when she tried to rescue her daughter.
According to information, the couple separated recently. Domestic violence is being reported as the cause for the separation.

Guyana Standard was informed that Angus went to the woman’s home and a heated argument ensued. Angus subsequently ran to the kitchen and armed himself with a knife. He then stabbed the woman several times. The woman’s mother tried to save her daughter, but she too was stabbed.

After attacking both women, he stabbed himself but later ran out of the yard and screamed for help.

The two women and their attacker were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where the young mother of two succumbed.
