A 29-year-old minibus driver is currently in police custody, following a fatal accident yesterday afternoon at Non Pariel Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

At the time of the accident, the 29-year-old of 28 Village, West Coast Berbice, was driving minibus BXX 4563, when he collided with a so far unidentified male pedal cyclist.

Enquiries disclosed that the bus was proceeding east along the northern side of the road. It is alleged by the driver that he saw the cyclist proceeding west on the said side of the road about 25 meters away,  and he sounded his horn.

The driver alleged that as he was about to pass the cyclist, when he ( cyclist) suddenly swerved south across the road and a collision occurred.

The cyclist was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting identification and post mortem.

The driver who passed a breathalyzer test is in custody assisting with the investigation.
