An investigation into the fire that destroyed a section of the Midtown Hotel Restaurant & Bar located at 176 Middle Street, Georgetown, on October 19, 2020, was deliberately set on fire.

This was confirmed by Fire Chief Marlon Gentle, who relayed to this publication that the investigation revealed that the fire was set in one of the rooms in the upper flat of the three-storey building.

He added that the matter had been handed over to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in order for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.

The fire reportedly started at about 17:30h on the day in question in one of the rooms in the upper flat of the three-storey building.

According to information received, a security guard on duty at a nearby business observed smoke emanating from the building’s upper flat and immediately summoned the GFS.

The tenders, along with the firemen, responded promptly and extinguished the blaze before it escalated.

The building is owned by former Minister of Telecommunication, Catherine Hughes and her husband, Nigel Hughes.
