The woman who died in a confrontation between police and prison escapees aback Better Hope, East Coast Demerara on Monday night, has been positively identified as Savita Rajkumar, called ‘Debbie’.

On 2021/03/23, at about 10:00 hrs, Shenike Williams, a 26-year-old housewife of Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, went to Sparendaam Police Station and claimed that she received information that her mother was involved in a shooting incident with the police.

She was taken to Lyken Funeral Home, Georgetown where the female body was shown to her and she positively identified the deceased to be that of her mother.

According to a police press officer, Rajkumar was a “close acquaintance” of one of the prison escapees who died.

On Monday night, police acting on information that the Mazaruni Prison escapees were hiding out at a location in the Better Hope South backlands, went to the said area where it was observed to be an abandon field in a bushy and swamped area.

The ranks observed that there were three wooden shacks on the field with two partly constructed ones. The Police ranks began clearing the first shack but no one was seen. As the ranks were approaching the second shack, a voice was heard in the third structure and the ranks immediately called out indicating their presence.

A man immediately emerged and discharged a round at the Police and then ran. The Police ranks returned fire. Two of the escaped prisoners and Rajkumar were killed, whilst one male escaped.

The escapees have since been identified as 25-year old Imran Ramsaywack and 22-year old Ryan Jones.

A sawn-off double-barrel shotgun was found at the scene.
