Health Minister, Dr Frank Antony has revealed that a quarter of the Guyanese population has already received COVID-19 vaccines.

“The response, so far, has been good. We’re now about 24, 25 percent of our adult population being covered, which is the first dose of vaccination. But we want that to be better. So, we’re hoping that we can get more people coming out, so that by the end of the week, probably, we’ll be closer to about 50 percent of our population. So, we continue to work and we encourage all age groups to really come out and get their vaccines – not just the younger people, but all age groups,” he said during today’s update.

Asked to translate the percentage of persons who have received the first dose, the Minister noted that figure represents 124,000 recipients. Aside from that figure, the Minister said that more than 2,800 persons have already received their second dose and have therefore been completely immunized.

Dr Anthony also revealed that Guyana is expected to receive an additional 38,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine through the COVAX mechanism.

“Well, COVAX has informed us that they’re going send us additional does of AstraZeneca. We don’t have a specific date as yet, but we are expecting 38,000 doses. Hopefully, we get that before the end of May and once we get that, we’ll utilize it to make sure that people get their vaccines,” the Health Official said.
