Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) along with Mobile Money Guyana (mmg+) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) to provide employment opportunities for Venezuelan migrants and refugees here in Guyana.

The MoU was signed on June 15 by members of GTT, mmg+, and HIAS at GTT’s Brickdam Head Office location.

GTT’s Chief Operating Officer for Business Solutions, Orson Ferguson said the company is excited about the collaboration with mmg+ and HIAS.

“This alliance is not only about providing opportunities for this group, but it is part of our stance to strengthen our community in Guyana. It is also the gateway in connecting more efficiently with some of our existing customers and welcoming new persons to the GTT family,” he said.

Sharing similar sentiments was General Manager of mmg+, Bobita Ram who indicated that several Venezuelan migrants utilise the mmg+ service to settle in Guyana.

“We are pleased to know that our service can provide an ease of payments for this community. With this new collaboration, we look forward to communicating more efficiently with our Spanish customers,” she said.

Meanwhile, HIAS Country Director, Alex Theran praised GTT and mmg+ for accepting its proposal on the welcomed partnership. “A partnership between HIAS and GTT/mmg+ reinforces the spirit of being welcome here in Guyana for Venezuelans. We believe that all people can learn from one another and add positively to society, if given the right guidance and opportunities,” Theran said.

“At HIAS, we are excited to work with the leading cellular company to create ties between the Venezuelan and Guyanese communities. We are grateful to GTT/mmg+ for providing opportunities to integrate into the community, work hard and create sustainable livelihoods,” she added.

On May 6, several Venezuelans benefitted from a one-day workshop that focused on small business and entrepreneurial opportunities for persons interested in becoming mmg+/GTT Top Up vendors. To date, nine persons have been trained as GTT Top Up vendors, while 16 will be trained within the month.

HIAS Guyana offers a comprehensive response to Venezuelans through interventions on gender-based violence prevention and response, community-based mental health and psychosocial support, humanitarian assistance, and integration.

On June 20, the companies along with HIAS will observe World Refugee Day that will be celebrated around the world. This year, it will be celebrated under the theme “Together we heal, learn and shine.”
