A man was today remanded after a court heard that he allegedly snatched a purse from a US Military Officer.

28-year-old Alvin Archer of Lot 2093 Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he denied a larceny of a person charge.

The charge alleges that on June 20 at Croal Street, Georgetown, he stole from the person of Melissa Owens, a purse valued at $8,000, containing an iPhone 11 valued at $250,000 and US$46, equivalent to GUY$9,200, with a total value of $267,200.

According to the Court Prosecutor, Owens, who is a Military Officer attached to the US Coast Guards, along with two of her colleagues, were walking in a western direction along the street at about 10:30 hrs. He said that Archer was near a group of persons playing cards at a corner and that he left from there, walked behind Owens, and snatched the purse containing the items from her possession.

He said that according to the facts, the man ran off with the purse but was apprehended by a police patrol which was in the area at the time.

The Prosecutor said that the matter was then reported to the police and the man was charged. He also objected to bail being granted and said that the man was charged in December 2020 with larceny.

The Magistrate remanded Archer until July 7.
