Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has denied the existence of a poll done by the government which purportedly shows an opposition victory at the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGEs).

It was the Leader of the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Opposition, Aubrey Norton who spoke of the poll during a recent press conference. He, however, refused to say more on the matter. According to him, if he divulges any more information, his source within the government “will be dealt with”. Norton was keen on the importance of protecting his source.

But Nandlall, a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Executive Member, in his usual style, rubbished the claim that such a poll was done.

“This obviously is a concoction…I don’t know of any poll that was done. But I don’t know which pollster can come to a conclusion that the APNU/AFC, at this point in time or any point in the near future, is likely to beat the PPP at any elections,” he said during his recent “Issues in the News” programme.

Norton’s claim comes against the backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the Coalition’s participation at the LGEs set for March next year. The smaller faction, the AFC has made it clear that its National Executive Council (NEC) will make that decision. Whether the party will join the APNU at those polls is also yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, the two parties are also yet to hash out their future as partners.

Earlier this year, the AFC said it will part ways with the APNU by the end of this year when the Cummingsburg Accord—the agreement binding the two political groups—comes to an end.
