A Former Policeman will spend the next ten years behind bars reconsidering his actions as a jury on Friday found him guilty of raping an underage girl.

28-year-old Wayde Padmore was found guilty and sentenced by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court. Padmore was intially charged for three counts of rape.

He was accused of raping a child under the age of 16, sexual activity with a child under 16, and causing a child to view a sexual act. Because of a undeciding jury, the first count of rape will have to be retried.

As it is sometimes customary, the sentencing hearing probation report was presented to the court about the convicted rapist. Padmore however claimed that he was framed by the victim and denied having knowledge of the act.

But Justice Kissoon took several things into consideration before sentencing, one of which he claimed was Padmore’s lack of remorse for the victim involved in the matter.

Justice Kissoon highlighted that acts of rape against minors has become a serious issue for all Guyanese. He noted that because Padmore was a law enforcer, he disgraced his oath to serve and protect.

The court heard that Padmore frequently visited the home of the victim. In December 2019, Padmore allegedly raped the victim during one of his usual visits.

Facts from the Prosecution stated that during the month of October 2020, he returned to the home and attempted to rape the victim a second time. His actions were however unsuccessful. He was later arrested and charged for rape.
