Even an auspicious occasion such as a flag-raising ceremony, could not escape the stain of political controversy. Region Four Chairman, Daniel Seeram, a prominent opposition figure, alleges that he was assaulted by none other than the Regional Executive Officer, Donald Gajraj, a government affiliate.

The incident is said to have occurred on Wednesday, 22nd February, 2023, at the premises of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC). Seeram had invited his opposition colleague to offer words when Gajraj reportedly snatched the microphone from his hand. According to opposition MP Ganesh Mahipaul, the whole incident was caught on camera and has since gone viral on social media.

“REO Gajraj aggressively approached Chairman Seeram and snatched the microphone out of his hand. The entire incident has been captured on video, which has gone viral on social media. REO Gajraj clearly assaulted the Regional Chairman,” Mahipaul stated.

He further claimed that Gajraj’s actions reflected the views of the Government, given that he was a political appointee.

“If the Government does not take decisive action to reprimand and remove Gajraj from his position, it will only serve to confirm the suspicion that the much-touted ‘One Guyana’ mantra is nothing more than a hollow slogan, bereft of any real meaning. The people of Guyana demand and deserve better than this. It is imperative that we uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that elected officials are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Seeram has formally reported the incident at the Beterverwagting Police Station. In a statement to the press, he recounted how he invited MP Catherine Hughes to offer remarks in light of the all-male lineup of speakers.

“As the atmosphere of peace, love, and unity enveloped the audience, I noticed that the program was predominantly male-dominated and, therefore, invited the Hon. Catherine Hughes MP to give brief remarks and add diversity. This announcement was well-received by the audience, who all applauded in approval.

However, the afternoon’s activity was marred by the inappropriate and vile actions of the Government’s Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr. Donald Gajraj, who insisted that Mrs. Hughes could not speak and further tried to snatch the microphone from my hand as I stood at the podium.”

Seeram is now calling for action to be taken, saying that REO is unfit for office and has brought disrespect and embarrassment to himself, the RDC, and the people of Guyana.

“To the government: the REO has demonstrated that he is not fit for the office he holds, and has brought disrespect and embarrassment to himself, the RDC and the people of Guyana. The ball is in your court to deal with this situation as the public looks on for the necessary corrective measures.”
