Police in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, arrested a 29-year-old man on Thursday after discovering an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession. The man was apprehended during a “cordon and search” operation conducted between 05:30 and 07:00hrs.

According to reports, police officers on patrol in Victoria Road stopped the man, who was riding a black bicycle southbound on Britton Street. Upon searching him, the officers found a Taurus semi-automatic .32 pistol with a magazine containing 12 matching rounds of ammunition in the waist of his pants.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and informed of the allegations against him. He was then transported to the Sparendaam Police Station, where he is currently being held while investigations continue. The firearm and ammunition were seized and lodged as evidence.

The possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition is a serious offence in Guyana, and those found guilty can face severe penalties. The police have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity or information that may assist with their investigations.
