The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is in the process of appointing ambassadors to Venezuela and Brazil, says Foreign Affairs Minister, Hugh Todd.

In response to questions from Opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Amanza Walton-Desir, the minister explained that the process is already underway and the government has taken its time to carefully review potential candidates in order to present suitable nominees for the positions.

According to Minister Todd, “The Government of Guyana intends to appoint an Ambassador to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and will soon seek the agreement of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for its nominee to fill the position of Ambassador to that country.”

Todd also emphasized that the appointment of ambassadors to all vacant nations is a priority for the government and that the review process has been thorough to ensure that the most suitable individuals are appointed to represent Guyana in these important countries.

Guyana’s last ambassador to Caracas, Venezuela was Cheryl Miles, who was appointed as Guyana’s Head of Mission in Venezuela back in 2016. However, she was removed from the post in December 2019 by the former A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Government.

The last ambassador to Brazil was George Talbot, who was appointed to the post in March 2016 and served until April 2021 when he was appointed Guyana’s ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Nevertheless, Minister Todd has indicated that the appointment of ambassadors to Venezuela and Brazil is crucial for Guyana as it seeks to strengthen its relationships with these neighboring countries.

He also acknowledged that by appointing qualified and experienced individuals to these positions, Guyana can enhance its presence in the region and promote its interests effectively.
