Tragedy struck on Monday at approximately 16:50hrs when a fatal accident occurred near Hill Foot on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

The incident involved a motor lorry bearing licence plate GAD 5905, owned by Alabama Equipment Rental and Transportation Service, and driven by Sudesh Rohit, a 32-year-old resident of Leguan Island.

The other vehicle involved was a motor car with licence plate PKK 475, owned and driven by Joel Alexander, a 23-year-old from Lot 145 Wilkins Street, Friendship, East Coast Demerara, who sadly lost his life in the collision.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the motor lorry was travelling eastward along the northern side of the road when the driver claimed that the motor car PKK 475, heading in the opposite direction, attempted to overtake a white vehicle (whose license plate remains unknown). In the process, the motor car strayed into the path of the lorry. Despite the lorry driver’s attempts to swerve to the left, the two vehicles collided.

Alexander sustained severe injuries to his head and body. Unconscious at the scene, he was promptly extracted from the vehicle by the police and swiftly transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Center for urgent medical attention. Sadly, upon arrival, medical professionals pronounced him dead.

Following the tragic incident, the body of the deceased was transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

To ascertain the circumstances leading to the collision, the lorry driver underwent a Breathalyzer test, which yielded negative results for alcohol consumption. However, he was taken into custody to aid in the ongoing investigation. Investigations are ongoing.
