Four young men were today charged in connection with a brawl at an East Coast Demerara (ECD) bar that has left another youth hospitalised.

The quartet, Avinash Mahabal, 24; Dhanraj Ramlochan, 19; Suruj Ramlochan, also 19; and 24-year-old, Lakeram Ramlochan appeared before Magistrate George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court 2 to answer the charge of unlawful wounding. They all pleaded not guilty and were granted $150,000 bail each. The case has been adjourned until August 8, 2023, to allow for the submission of statements.

According to police reports, the victim, Sudesh Motie, 28, of Martyr’s Ville, ECD was at the 592 Bar at Mon Repos with a colleague when he was attacked by several persons who began throwing bricks at him. He was also stabbed to the right shoulder, before being chopped to the back of the neck and hand by two other individuals.

Despite the onslaught, Motie managed to escape from his attackers and sought refuge on the road in front of the bar. From there, he witnessed his colleague being subjected to a brutal beating by the suspects for approximately two minutes before the assailants fled the scene.

With the assistance of his sister, Motie was immediately transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted. However, the injuries sustained during the attack were significant and required ongoing medical treatment.

His status is unknown at this time, however, Guyana Standard will endeavour to provide a follow-up when the information becomes available.
