Two children were killed in a fire at Belmont, Mahaica earlier today. According to a Guyana Fire Service (GFS) source, the children were left home alone.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, but the source noted that efforts made by a relative to rescue the children proved futile since the doors leading to the upper flat of the building were heavily secured.

At least two news agencies have confirmed that the windows were also secured by bars, making it difficult for residents to rescue the children, whose ages and identities are also yet to be determined.
