The main Parliamentary Opposition says it is in receipt of more rape allegations against Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Nigel Dharamlall. It said also that it has information regarding similar accusations against other government officials. Making the disclosure today was a former magistrate and sitting opposition parliamentarian, Geeta Chandan-Edmond.

“We are a very active opposition; we are in touch with our base; and we are continuously receiving reports. I did say earlier on that we are in receipt of unconfirmed reports, as it is, as it relates to several other reports that will be made officially to the police as it relates to the subject minister and also as it relates to other government officials,” Chandan-Edmond said.

The parliamentarian also assured that the party will continue to follow and monitor these reports and provide whatever assistance her party can.

“As it is right now, we are standing on the side of justice,” the MP said.

Dharamlall is being accused of raping a 16-year-old schoolgirl last year at his home. The incident made headlines several days ago after the child took to social media and described in detail what transpired.

The minister has since proceeded on leave. The file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
