In a recent interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali underscored that the relationship between Guyana and China is poised for growth, with a new focus on environmental issues. The bilateral partnership will soon expand to include climate change and environmental and ecological services.

Over time, China has significantly contributed to the development of various sectors in Guyana, including technology, infrastructure, and education. Dr. Ali acknowledged the critical role that China’s HUAWEI company plays in supporting Guyana’s safe city programme and in collaborating with the private sector to roll out 5G in the country.

The President highlighted numerous infrastructure projects helmed by Chinese companies, particularly the construction of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge by the China Railway Construction Company Limited (CRCCL).

Moreover, the partnership extends to the domain of human resource development and education, with a number of Guyanese benefiting from studying in China through exchange programmes and scholarships. Notably, the two governments recently reached an agreement to train several Guyanese in China in aquaculture management. This initiative aims to modernize and expand the local food sector.

In light of Guyana’s burgeoning oil and gas sector, President Ali expressed his interest in attracting more Chinese companies to participate in the industry. He pointed out that the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is already part of a consortium in the Stabroek Block, in partnership with Exxon, Hess, and the Guyanese Government. With proven reserves of 11 billion barrels and 14 more blocks up for auction, the President hopes to see increased involvement from Chinese companies.

President Ali reaffirmed his administration’s support for the One-China Policy and his commitment to further strengthening diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China.
