Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred about 12:10hrs yesterday (Monday) at Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is Michael Bascom,a 34-year-old who served as the Chief of Security for BK Incorporated.

The accident involved motor pickup PYY 2329, owned by BK International Inc and driven at the time by Bascom, of Lot J Bent Street and motor car PVV 1046, driven by Jailall Mohanlall, a 57-year-old resident of Non-Pareil, ECD.

Enquiries disclosed that the pickup was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of Montrose Railway Embankment road at a fast rate in an attempt to overtake the motor car that was proceeding in the same direction in front.

While overtaking, an unknown motor vehicle was proceeding east on the northern driving lane of the said road, and upon seeing that, the driver of the pick up (Bascom) swerved south. He lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a southwestern direction and collided with two utility poles, breaking them in half.

The driver and occupant Stephen Thompson, a 19-year-old of Lot 100 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, who was seated in the left-side front passenger seat of the pickup, both received bodily injuries.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene of the accident, where a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital pronounced Bascom (the pick up driver) dead.

Thompson was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital by ambulance to seek medical attention. Bascom’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. He leaves to mourn his wife and daughter.

Investigations are in progress.
