Dr. Brian Alvarez, a distinguished member of the Donation and Transplantation Institute (DTI), recently concluded a successful mission in Guyana, where he provided crucial support to the Ministry of Health in executing a deceased donation programme in accordance with the National Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Act 2022.

During his stay from August 7 to 19, 2023, Dr. Alvarez collaborated closely with the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the Ministry of Health. Together, they diligently crafted standard operating procedures, hospital protocols, and essential documentation that laid the foundation for the forthcoming deceased donation program.

The primary objective of this joint effort was to introduce and establish deceased organ donation practices within the country. Dr. Alvarez’s involvement proved instrumental in fostering cooperation among 20 distinct teams within the hospital, thus setting up a comprehensive and integrated program.

DTI, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the quality of life through organ, tissue, and cell transplantation, lauded the invaluable contributions of its founders — a consortium of internationally acclaimed experts in the field. DTI serves as a hub that assembles global specialists to guide and bolster projects related to organ, tissue, and cell transplantation, forming an expansive research network.

Dr. Alvarez’s visit revolved around harmonizing the endeavors of various hospital departments, pinpointing precise requisites and resources for each stage of the process. This meticulous planning ensured seamless collaboration and effective communication among all participating teams.

At the epicenter of this successful implementation phase stood the visionary leadership of the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Agency (HOATTA), spearheaded by Dr. Shanti Singh.

DTI has since expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Navindranauth Rambaran, Medical Director of GPHC, for his pivotal role in extending unwavering support and hospitality throughout Dr. Alvarez’s visit. It was noted that Dr. Rambaran’s dedication facilitated an environment conducive to focused mission execution.

It was keen to note that while the journey of implementation continues, the collective efforts of diverse hospital teams stand poised to transform deceased organ donation into a reality, ultimately charting a course to save more lives.
