A tragic marine collision on the Berbice River during a rescue operation has claimed the life of a boat captain in the vicinity of Jeep Landing, Kwakwani.
Police said they are investigating a tragic maritime accident that occurred on the western side of the Berbice River near Jeep Landing on Friday, July 3, 2026. The incident, which took place around 7:40 p.m., resulted in the death of 60-year-old Alvin Adams, a boat captain from New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to initial reports, a timber-carrying barge was drifting downstream due to strong river currents when a tugboat attempted to render assistance. As the tugboat approached the drifting barge, the two vessels collided. Adams, who was onboard the tugboat, was caught between the vessels and sustained severe injuries.
Emergency responders quickly rescued Adams and transported him to Kwakwani Public Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is now at the hospital and is scheduled to be transferred to G-Jetsco Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
