A 14-year-old student of Richard Ishmael Secondary School has surrendered to police in connection with the fatal motorcycle collision that killed 10-year-old Gabriela Rodrigues.
The student visited the Ruimveldt Police Station on Monday morning and was accompanied by his parents and an attorney.
A file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
Rodrigues, a pupil of Ketley Primary School and a resident of James Street, Albouystown, was struck by a motorcycle on Independence Boulevard on Saturday while returning home from church.
Jennifer Bernard, Rodrigues’ sister told the Guyana Standard that the juvenile rider had been performing wheelie when he lost control and collided with her sister. At the time of the incident, Rodrigues was walking along the pedestrian path along the Independence Boulevard.
The impact threw Rodrigues a short distance away causing severe head trauma, internal injuries and a punctured lung. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation but later succumbed to her injuries.
Guyana Standard was told that the rider removed the motorcycle’s key and fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police later took possession of the motorcycle
