Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, earlier today encouraged students to explore the many career opportunities available within the agriculture sector, noting that agriculture has evolved beyond the traditional practices of cultivating crops and rearing livestock.
Addressing students and other attendees at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute’s (NAREI) Open Day at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Minister Mustapha expressed satisfaction with the large number of educational institutions represented at the event. He explained that modern agriculture incorporates science, technology, research, engineering, innovation, and several other specialised fields, offering young people diverse opportunities to contribute to the country’s development.
The Minister also highlighted Guyana’s significant progress in strengthening food security, noting that the country has been recognised as the only nation among 186 assessed with the capacity to feed its population using domestically produced food.
Minister Mustapha encouraged students to take a greater interest in agriculture and consider careers within the sector, emphasising that the next generation of agricultural professionals will play an important role in sustaining Guyana’s food security achievements and advancing its agricultural transformation.
The Open Day, held as part of Agriculture Month 2026 activities, provides an opportunity for students, farmers, and members of the public to gain firsthand knowledge of NAREI’s work in agricultural research, innovation, and extension services. The event also seeks to raise awareness of modern agricultural practices, showcase advancements in the sector, and encourage greater youth participation in agriculture by highlighting the diverse opportunities available within the industry.
