Less than six months after Guyana began benefitting from free online courses from Coursera, the country is now ranked number one for interest shown in the initiative, number one in the world for members enrolled, and has also copped the top position globally for the number of graduates. Making this revelation in the National Assembly today, was the Education Minister, Priya Manickchand.

She told the House that some 53,301 Guyanese citizens would have registered for the programme, 31,297 took courses, with 9473 receiving certificates. Overall, 43,305 certificates were issued to Guyanese.

Manickchand said that she greenlighted the commencement of the project one month after getting into office, whereas, the former minister, Nicolette Henry, was being ‘begged’ by the institution to begin the partnership.
