The Government of Guyana will make education at the University of Guyana (UG) free of charge from 2025, fulfilling a key promise from its 2020–2025 manifesto.

President Ali made the announcement while addressing a special sitting of the National Assembly at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) in Liliendaal on Thursday.

“This measure will benefit in excess of 11,000 current students at UG immediately, and, of course, all new entrants in the future. The future belongs to all of these young people,” said President Ali.

He emphasized that this initiative would contribute to the development of Guyana’s human capital, fostering a more prosperous future for the country and all the young people who will benefit from this opportunity.

Earlier this year, the government launched the student loan write-off program for UG students, which could potentially see up to $8 billion in student loans being forgiven during its initial phase.

Additionally, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) scholarship program, which has already benefited 29,000 students, continues to make university education more accessible to families across the nation.
