For the last five years, black leaders within the Working People’s Alliance and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have been working in their respective ways to raise the consciousness of their support base, particularly youths. But the rise of US-sanctioned businessman, Azruddin Mohamed as a political opponent, strengthened by spirit of young brothers and sisters of the Afro-Guyanese community, signals clearly that the opposition’s efforts were ineffective.
Offering this perspective last evening on his show, Politics 101, was WPA Executive Member, Dr. David Hinds. The politician said he observed since 2020 that there was an urgent need for greater activism on the part of black leaders to engage their support base regarding their economic and cultural vulnerabilities. He said this state of affairs necessitated having voices such as his, espouse lessons about the strength and power of one’s identity while offering a space for other leaders to share such messages.
Dr. Hinds said it is on this backdrop that he started his online show. He noted that there were several uncomfortable truths or statements made over the years, leaving many in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to label him a racist. Unfazed by this, the politician said he and other leaders recognized the need to forge ahead because “black people will be bought again, they would be fair game to be bought again…”
Dr. Hinds said he believes many are pleased to see “young black people running behind Mohamed because it does their job for them. Black people vote for Mohamed, he won’t win the elections, but it is a vote that is coming from our side…”
Dr. Hinds said understandably, members within the APNU and WPA’s support base are “panicking” about the attention Mohamed is receiving. The optics aren’t good. He expressed confidence however that crowds would not translate into an overwhelming number of votes. The WPA leader said those who find refuge in Mohamed’s camp, were obviously missed in the campaign of consciousness but the good fight will continue.
