At the fifth community consultation, held on Monday at Westminster Secondary School, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali outlined an ambitious vision to create communities that are not only physically transformed but also designed to enhance the quality of life for every resident.
He stressed that the Model Village concept is not about making every community look alike but about providing a consistent standard of development across the country.
“The transformation you see in Georgetown must be the transformation you live and experience in your own villages,” President Ali stated.
President Ali said people must remain at the centre of the initiative, with residents playing an active role in shaping the future of their communities through consultation and shared responsibility.
“A community is not a place or a geographical location. A community is made up of people. People must be the centre of this development,” he stated.
Presenting the proposed vision for La Parfaite Harmonie, the president outlined plans to transform approximately 245 acres through upgraded roads, drainage, fire hydrants, CCTV coverage, enhanced lighting, green spaces, recreational facilities, improved signage, food courts, markets and public amenities.
He explained that the pilot area includes 61 roads, about 937 households, one school, one health centre, two places of worship, 29 businesses and four green spaces, all of which will be integrated into a safer, cleaner and more organised community.
The initiative will also create dedicated recreational parks, walking trails for senior citizens, children’s play areas, improved drainage networks and designated commercial spaces to enhance both safety and quality of life.
The head of state said the initiative goes beyond physical infrastructure, focusing equally on strengthening values, social cohesion and community pride through partnerships with churches, mosques, temples and residents. (Department of Public Information)
